The most successful Afro-Chic interiors rarely feel overdecorated. Instead, one or two strong pieces of artwork create the mood.
Look for bold silhouettes, elegant portraiture, textile-inspired pattern and compositions with rich earthy colors. Against warm white, cream, chocolate brown or muted terracotta walls, these pieces can look particularly sophisticated.

The contrast between a colorful statement piece and quieter monochrome photography can also make an interesting gallery wall.
Afrohemian style takes the relaxed, layered character of bohemian decorating and combines it with African-inspired color, pattern, craftsmanship and imagery.
Wall art featuring patterned textiles, traditional dress, bold graphic forms and warm shades of rust, ochre, olive, burgundy and brown works particularly well here.
Pair the artwork with tactile materials rather than adding too many competing patterns — natural wood, woven baskets, linen, leather, rattan and textured neutral fabrics allow a colorful print to remain the focal point.
For a quieter interpretation of the look, monochrome photography can be exceptionally effective.
African landscapes, wildlife and documentary-style images bring depth and atmosphere while keeping the palette restrained. A generously sized black-and-white photograph in a simple black, dark wood or pale gallery-style frame can give a room an almost editorial quality.
This is also an easy way to introduce African imagery into a modern or minimalist home without changing the existing color scheme.
How to Style Afro-Chic Artwork
Choose scale over quantity. One beautifully framed oversized piece usually creates more impact than a collection of small, unrelated prints.
Repeat colors subtly. Pick one or two shades from the artwork and echo them elsewhere through pillows, throws, ceramics or a rug.
